School Field Trips & Small Group Tours

Educational tours of the aquaponic facility and urban farm are available for public, private, charter and home school groups. Educators will find this experience to be a rich and exciting resource of educational opportunities for students of all ages.

The tour will explore the many projects that are being conducted at this aquaponic learning center. Topics that will be covered may include, but are not limited to: benefits and application of aquaponics, different types of system designs (vertical, flood and drain, deep water techniques, etc.), and grow bed designs and their facilitation. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about the importance and applications of several urban farming growing techniques. A farm-like petting area will allow for hands-on education of several types of farm animals such as chickens, quail, rabbits, turkeys, and ducks along with tilapia fish. The natural holistic opportunities offered through plants and produce is also discussed along with the smells and tastes of many different plants, herbs and flowers. Discussions can be customized to follow the current classroom teachings of each particular group.

Role of Chaperones

We invite all accompanying parents/chaperones to join in on the field trips and encourage them to help shepherd the students in their group. With their help, the guides will be free to focus on field trip activities – not crowd control.

Student Ratio

A ratio of 2 teachers or chaperones per 20 students must be maintained. Together We Stand will supply 1 trained guide instructor for each group of up to 20 students, maintaining a minimum adult student ratio of 3 adults for each 20 participants.

Groups

Please divide the children into small groups ahead of time, so that after our introduction we can efficiently split up and enjoy as much time as possible enjoying the facilities. We recommend that you split your group into smaller groups no larger than 20 per group. The smaller the group the better but not more than 5 groups per field trip.

Name Tags

Name Tags are a great help to us, especially if they are color-coded for the groups (the red group, the blue group, etc.).

Dress appropriately

with closed-toed shoes. Make sure students are prepared for the weather and keep in mind that this is a hands-on experience — they may get dirty.

Arrival Time

Plan on arriving 20 minutes early. It always seems to take a little longer than planned to get here and walking from the parking area to the campus can take time with a group of children. Also, it’s a good idea to have a few extra minutes for the students to have a snack before the field trip begins. Being on time is important because we want to maximize the time we have with your students, and also as a courtesy to our volunteers who make time in their schedules to teach the field trips.

Weather

If it looks like there will be a light rain during your visit please encourage your students to bring rain wear and boots if they have them. Light rain is no problem, but heavy rain will cancel a field trip. We will call to reschedule on the morning of the field trip if the rain is too heavy.

Allergies

This program may include tasting of fruits and vegetables. Please let us know if your class includes children who have allergies that might be of concern.

Registration Cost

The standard field trip is for groups of 25 or more. Registration is $15 per student or $375.00 (whichever is greater). Chaperones and teachers up to the stated ratio above (2 per 20) will be admitted at no additional cost. Additional chaperones will be subject to the $15 per person admission fee.

Small Groups tours are for groups of 4-24 persons. Cost for groups count of 4-12 is $35.00 per person groups 13-24 is $30.00 per person.
